Danish Scampi Company

A Danish company handling and distributing European lobsters presented a problem within the production facilities. Through a collaboration with students from Aalborg University, our hyperspectral imaging software could result in enhancements in terms of consistency, working conditions, and overall flexibility.

The Problem

A Danish scampi processing company faced challenges in manual scampi handling and quality control at its facilities. Seeking to overcome labor costs, employee scarcity, and enhance overall quality and processing rates, the company – along with students from Aalborg University – turned to SPKTRA, a specialist in hyperspectral imaging for various food products. The existing manual sorting process, conducted by three workers, posed physical strain over time. The company’s objective was to automate their quality check using hyperspectral technologies to improve efficiency, consistency, and flexibility in their processing operations

The Solution

Rotten scampi presented the highest risk, consequently leading to critical customer complaints and potential health issues. SPKTRA developed a HSI camera with controlled lighting in a sealed environment, allowing for accurate detection of spoilage. 

The user interface facilitated image capture and viewing, comparing scampi conditions side by side with a graph indicating the spectral differences. This automated solution aimed to alleviate their manual sorting challenges, reduce the risk of packaging spoiled scampi, and enhance overall processing efficiency. The results reveal that the lower model achieved 100% accuracy in image classification, while the upper model demonstrated an impressive 94% accuracy rate.

This collaboration successfully addressed manual handling challenges. The introduction of hyperspectral imaging technology not only mitigated labor costs and employee scarcity but also significantly improved efficiency, consistency, and flexibility in processing operations. This automated solution stands as a testament to the tangible benefits of technology integration in enhancing overall processing efficiency and ensuring the quality of the final product.
